Learning How to Hydrofoil: Understanding Some Basics
Let's go through some absolute basics for how a hydrofoil works so that you can have a better understanding of what the foil is doing under the water, which in turn helps with progression. a hydrofoil is much like a small aeroplane. It comes under the same forces of Thrust, drag, lift, and weight. It also flies the same and moves in a similar way. Knowing that can help visualise how the foil is behaving. at slower speeds, the hydrofoil will fly pitched up with an increased angle of attack. at a fast speed, the foil shape will generate lift. It's a combination of both of those that help the foil fly and helps the rider, understand how to balance/distribute weight. Learning to hydrofoil is fun there are many hydrofoil disciplines. hopefully, this video helps with some hydrofoil basics you can take with you to your next session.

    A week of evenings searching for a video like this...wading through the 'top list garbage heap' was exhausting. So sad that the best videos are buried under trash as always. I'm going to attempt to wire cut a foam core as first step to save time and avoid shaping asymmetry. I've made timber-based surfboard fins and such, but that's heavier than foam and asymmetry is always lurking. The cost of this gear is still outrageous. They can make this stuff for pennies by the millions. I refuse to support such greed by purchasing. I understand it was started by people like you and me who spent countless hours designing and manufacturing than trying to sell to smaller market, but at some point the profit scale tips and greed soars once it becomes popular. It is now extremely popular. Manufacturing is streamlined. Cost of machines and employees has been paid for 10 times over. It's pure greed to sell a foil for 500-$2000 or more when it costs $50-100 to make.

    I definitely think you are doing things correctly. It reminds me of when windsurfing exploded in the late 70's early 80's and wave boards were tried for the first time with a sail ! From there on it was trial and error shaping short windsurfers. Don't go with the flow - That's just mainstream and what is easiest and sells most and makes most money for the makers. You have the freedom of making things juts how YOU like them. Well done ! In my eyes - but I've actually never foiled ... (however I do know hydrodynamics), the only advantage of a bend in the foil vs a straight foil is to get MORE surface within a given width. It just gives you more lift for a same width. A bit like concave undersides simply give you MORE surface on a windsurfer so that it actually starts planing earlier. Keep on at it. I've done that by necessity all my life and know so much more than the rich guys who simply buy the latest equipment. They are my pool for trying / testing as I often asked if I could try their equipment and took waht was good and left the mainstream behind.

    I used this video to work on self launch. Both times I did, I had the line on the underside catch the wingtip and go spiraling out of control. The first time it corrected itself, the second time it did not. It felt very dangerous and uncontrolled.

    • @FlukesKitesurfing
      @FlukesKitesurfing 2 місяці тому

      Yeah if the wing tip catches it can feel crazy. This is one of the reasons some people suggest to have 1 hand on the quick release, or do the launch not even hooked in, so you can let go quickly in that event. That said, normally if the wing tip is catching it means there was no enough tension on the lines while walking the arc.

    I've been building mine a few years now since I started wing surfing. It's great to see a nice hand-built front wing. I use 3D printing for all but 1 of my wings. First was composites clad 3D printed core, then a CNC multi laminated ply wing(2650). After that I did all moulds from 3D printed models and laid carbon fibre in them. Necessary for the thinner higher performance ones.

    Luke. Great stuff. Spot on. My no wind life in san diego has taught me to also use a wave surf skill as well. smooth rail to rail carve combined with a little squat and extend, this is all to pump and make speed. Similar to what a surfer does on a wave face. These can be quick or slow but has to be in sync with the kite. Easier said than done. The wiggle is often the make or break for me getting up to speed in a lull or making it into a wave . Cheers
